Flaming B-52

The Flaming B-52 is a theatrical and popular party shot, building upon the classic B-52 recipe. It consists of three distinct layers: a coffee liqueur base, a creamy Irish liqueur middle, and a high-proof orange liqueur top. The magic happens when the top layer is ignited, creating a blue flame that caramelizes the sugar and warms the shot. It offers a rush of sweet, complex flavors and a memorable experience.

Backstory

The Flaming B-52 is a modern adaptation of the B-52 shot, which emerged in the 1970s. The original was likely named after the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress bomber due to its "bombs away" effect. The "flaming" variation was created to add a spectacular pyrotechnic element to the drinking experience, making it a staple for celebrations and lively bars.
Origin
The original B-52 is credited to Peter Fich, a head bartender in Banff, Canada, in 1977. The flaming version's exact origin is less clear but became popular in the late 1980s and 1990s as "extreme" cocktails and showmanship behind the bar gained traction.

Flaming B-52

The drink is almost exclusively known as the Flaming B-52, sometimes written without the hyphen as Flaming B52. It is a direct variation of the classic B-52 shot, which is on the IBA official cocktail list.

Ingredients

This shot requires three core liqueurs: a coffee liqueur like Kahlúa, an Irish cream like Baileys, and a high-proof orange liqueur like Grand Marnier for the flammable top layer.
  • Coffee Liqueur15 ml / 0.5 oz
Kahlúa is the classic choice and forms the bottom layer.
  • Irish Cream Liqueur15 ml / 0.5 oz
Baileys Irish Cream is standard and creates the middle layer.
  • Orange Liqueur15 ml / 0.5 oz
Grand Marnier is traditionally used for the top layer as its higher proof (40% ABV) allows it to be ignited. Cointreau or Triple Sec can be used but may not light as easily.

Mixing equipments

You will need a bar spoon (or a regular teaspoon held upside down) to create the distinct layers. A long-reach lighter or matches are essential for safely igniting the shot.
  • Bar Spoon - for layering the liqueurs gently.
  • Lighter or Matches - for igniting the shot.

Instructions

Carefully layer the Kahlúa, Baileys, and Grand Marnier in a shot glass using a spoon. Ignite the top layer and, after ensuring safety precautions are met, consume immediately by blowing out the flame or using a straw.
1. Pour the coffee liqueur (Kahlúa) into the bottom of a shot glass.
2. Hold a bar spoon upside down over the glass, with the tip touching the inside edge. Slowly pour the Irish cream (Baileys) over the back of the spoon to create a distinct second layer.
3. Wipe the spoon clean, and repeat the process, slowly pouring the orange liqueur (Grand Marnier) over the spoon to create the third and final layer.
4. Place the shot on a heatproof surface. Carefully ignite the top layer with a long lighter or match. The flame will be blue and may be hard to see in bright light.
5. IMPORTANT SAFETY: Do not drink the shot while it is still on fire. Either blow the flame out gently before shooting it, or place a straw in the glass and drink the entire shot quickly from the bottom up (the flame will extinguish as you drink). Be extremely careful with the open flame, keep it away from flammable objects, and do not lean over the shot.

Garnishing

The garnish for this shot is the spectacle of the flame itself. No other garnish is required as it would interfere with the flaming and consumption.
  • Flame - The ignited top layer serves as the primary, dynamic garnish.
